👂🏼 Want to "hear" some good news?

Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see. -- Mark Twain

Bursting Out | Acrylic on canvas | 36" x 36"

I have exciting news. I'm just back from surgery, where I received a second cochlear implant. It took years to “qualify” (become deaf enough) for the first implant on my left side, but only a few months to qualify for the second. My right ear must have learned how good my left ear had it with the implant and knew that my brain training had largely been done. So my right ear turned off the hearing to get a implant quickly.

Anyway, it only took me a few months to become completely deaf. Being deaf is a hassle. It is very isolating, and makes much of life bewildering. I'm grateful to be a painter, and to still have good eyesight. Some of my friends aren’t so lucky, they lost their sight and now use canes and the city bus to get around. Now that is bravery! Navigating life without sight, for me, would be much worse than being deaf.

All of that is to say that I have finally been able to get back to my studio. Soon I'll show you the paintings I'm working on, along with a new series in the planning phase. Stay tuned for future updates.

Homecoming

Do you own one of my paintings? If so, would you send me a photo of where it lives? I love seeing my old friends in their new homes.

Sketches of Jesus

Several years ago, I painted Sketches of Jesus, a series inspired by a question I received about my personal beliefs. This collection of six paintings was purchased and donated to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 901 E. Neal in Salina. They're on display now (beautifully arranged by Pat Ault-Duell). Inquire at the church's front office if you'd like to see them.
