I painted this for the local art centers invitational. The theme was 'Comfort and Death.' Spending hours painting gives you a chance to think about suffering, grief and death. I don't want to do that all the time, but it's not a bad exercise from time to time. Death and grief are universal human experiences. I imagine this man having just lost his loved one and his settling into a long period of grief. Other than my folks, I have not lost through death, persons that I loved. That's an experience that may be ahead of me. I hope I can handle it with grace and wisdom.
