Male Back View

16" x 20" | Oil

This is one of my favorite models. He is muscular and very defined. He is also very athletic and willing to try various poses. I have studied Egon Schiele and particularly the poses he puts his figures in. This painting is not necessarily inspired by Schiele, but I am also not sure exactly how this pose came about.
I created this image in what I call the dark room of my studio. With darkened windows and directed overhead lighting, I can control the shadows and highlights. I think it gives me the possibility of creating a painting with more depth and three-dimensionality. I hope to paint this model under these lighting conditions again.
